 Dr.S.K.Chakraborty

Dr. S.K Chakraborty (b. 29/01/1940, d. 13/09/2018) is a Cost Accountant by profession. Throughout graduation, post graduation till ICWA days he had been a first-rank holder.Later he did his Ph.D. from University of Liverpool.

After returning to India he worked in industry for 4 years. This was followed by a long academic stint in IIM Calcutta for 32 years till his retirement in 2003. Apart from IIM Calcutta, he had also been invited on academic stints to Princeton University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Darmstadt Institute of Technology etc.

During the initial years he concentrated on ‘Finance and Control’, ‘MBO’ etc. It was from the early 1980s that he started his seminal work in the field of ‘Human Values and Ethics’ based on Indian Ethos as a way of repaying his debt back to the nation.

​

In 1992 Management Centre for Human Values was set-up in IIM Calcutta as a self-financed entity. 25 years down-the-line it is still one of its type in India. Meanwhile, he had been conducting Workshops on the above theme for the senior management cadre of NTPC, GRSE, MECL, BPCL, NMDC,Tata Motors, SBI, BEL, PGCIL, Bank of Maharashtra, HAL, Ambuja, IFFCO etc. In 1993 as a mark of recognition towards his contributions in the field of management studies that he was conferred the Best Management Teacher Award by AIMA.

Over the years he has authored and co-authored almost 40 books of which the last 30 are in the areas of Human Values and Ethics. He was the Founder Editorof journals like Decision, Journal of Human Values and Shraddha.

​

He had also been on the Boards and expert committees of several GOI institutions (like UTI, LIC, etc.). Till recently he was a member of the BOG, IIM Indore.
